Pumpkin Composting

As fall and Halloween come to a close, Trumbull offers several easy, environmentally friendly options for disposing of pumpkins, jack‑o‑lanterns, and decorative squash. Composting these items is far better than placing them in the trash, as it keeps organic material out of landfills, reduces methane emissions, and allows nutrients to return to the soil instead of contributing to waste.

Please compost only pumpkins that are free of paint, glitter, stickers, or other synthetic decorations.

Pumpkin Composting Options:

Transfer Station Drop‑Off (NEW Pilot Program)
• Drop off pumpkins in the clearly marked dumpster from November 2–20, 2026. After this time, pumpkins can be placed in the organic, brush pile at the Transfer Station along with hay bales and cornstalks. www.trumbull-ct.gov/1218/Organic-Material

Town Leaf Pickup Program
• Set your pumpkins out with your leaf pile to be collected during the regular curbside leaf collection. No extra steps necessary! www.trumbull-ct.gov/617/Leaf-Pickup-Program

Backyard Composting
 • Add pumpkins to your backyard compost bin or pile.
 • For best results: chop pumpkins, remove seeds, bury the material, and cover with 6–10 inches of soil.
• Keep unwanted critters away by securing trash, keeping grills clean, and avoiding adding meat or oils to compost. www.trumbull-ct.gov/1228/Composting
