First Selectman Timothy M. Herbst offered the following statement on Martin Luther King Day, 2011:
“Today marks the 25th anniversary of a national holiday honoring the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King. History will record that Dr. King’s life and work has had a profound impact on our nation. Dr. King stood for social justice through non-violent measures. His work in promoting desegregation and equal opportunity has helped every ethnicity and nationality that has sought a better way of life in the United States of America. Our people are stronger and our nation is better because of the efforts of Dr. King. In declaring a national holiday to honor Dr. King’s life and work, President Reagan appropriately characterized Dr. King as a “truly prophetic voice that reached out over the chasms of hostility, prejudice, ignorance and feat to touch the conscience of America.” The Town of Trumbull joins the rest of the nation in honoring the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King.”
