State Grant Funds New Traffic Light at Chip’s Shopping Center

March 25, 2019 - The CT Department of Transportation has approved a traffic light at 37-57 Monroe Turnpike, most commonly known as Chip’s Shopping Center. The Town of Trumbull was recently notified that, through the hard of work of our town engineers and staff, Trumbull has been awarded the necessary state grant funds to install a traffic light at the entrance to this shopping center. The grant application was submitted to CT DOT at the direction of First Selectman Tesoro on November 19, 2018.  The project had previously been approved by MetroCOG, the area’s regional planning agency. The project will now move swiftly to the design process, which includes the redirection of the trail and trail crossing to the envisioned traffic light.

The traffic light will not only address the safety concerns of the vehicle traffic using the shopping center, but it will also address the concerns of the pedestrian and bicycle users of the Pequonnock River Trail at Route 111 as well. The trail now has over 6,000 trail users and growing.  The approved plan will redirect users to cross at the envisioned traffic light.

First Selectman Vicki Tesoro states, “I have long advocated for a traffic light at this location. Public safety is a top priority of my administration, and I am pleased the new light will address the safety concerns for both the shopping center and the trail to continue to make Trumbull a safe place to live, work, and play.”
