Postponement of Taxes due January 1, 2021
On Wednesday, December 16, 2020, Governor Lamont issued Executive Order 9R. This order allows municipalities to apply the same tax program that offered relief to municipal taxpayers last spring, to local property and specified other taxes that will become due and payable on January 1, 2021.
As many of our homeowners and businesses are still struggling due to this crisis, I have decided, in accordance with the Governor’s order, that the municipal tax deferment (postponement) program approved by the Trumbull Town Council on 4/21/2020 giving all of our taxpayers, residents, and businesses the ability to postpone payment of their local property taxes will be applied to the tax bills that will become due and payable on January 1, 2021.
The last day for payment of these taxes without interest is extended from Monday, February 1, 2021 to Thursday, April 1, 2021.
This postponement will apply to the following municipal taxes and fees that will become due on January 1, 2021:
- Real Estate Tax -- 3rd installment of 2019 Grand List
- Motor Vehicle Tax -- 2nd installment of 2019 Grand List
- Supplemental Motor Vehicle Tax -- 2019 Grand List
- Personal Property Tax -- 2nd installment of 2019 Grand List
- 2020 Sewer Assessment -- 3rd installment
Again, the last day for payment of all of the above taxes without interest is extended from Monday, February 1, 2021 to Thursday, April 1, 2021.
- Imposition of lien fees is not affected.
- Real estate accounts in escrow and paid by a bank are not eligible for this program.
- No application is necessary for taxpayers, including businesses, unless they are considered a landlord.
- Landlords must qualify to be considered eligible by filing an application with the Tax Assessor’s Office. The application deadline is January 15, 2021.

- Taxpayers should further understand that January payments made after April 1, 2021 will bear interest at the rate of 1-1/2% per month, so that a payment made on April 2, for example, will require payment of 6% interest.

Notice to Trumbull Taxpayers on Upcoming Tax Payments
Taxpayers: The 2nd Installment of Motor Vehicle and Supplemental Motor Vehicle taxes are due January 1, 2021 and the 3rd Installment of 2019 Grand List Real Estate taxes and 2020 Sewer Assessment are due January 1, 2021. The last day to pay without penalty is February 1, 2021.
THE SUPPLEMENTAL MOTOR VEHICLE TAX BILL IS DUE IN FULL ON January 1, 2021 PLEASE NOTE: MV supplemental bills will be mailed out at the end of December, 2020.
Section 12-71B of the General Statutes of Connecticut states that a motor vehicle registered between October 2, 2019 and July 31, 2020 must be taxed and said tax is due in full during January, 2021. If payment is not made by February 1, 2021, the supplemental tax bill will become delinquent and subject to interest charges at the rate of 1½% per month from the due date. The minimum interest charge is $2.00.
Taxpayer is still liable for payment in FULL on Motor Vehicle bills received in July of 2020 based on Oct. 1, 2019 Assessment.
THE JANUARY PROPERTY TAX INSTALLMENT IS DUE ON THE GRAND LIST OF 2019 on January 1, 2021.
The JANUARY installment of Property taxes on the Grand List of 2019 is due and payable on JANUARY 1, 2021. If payment is not made by FEBRUARY 1, 2021, the installment will become delinquent and subject to interest at the rate of 1 ½% per month from the installment due date. The minimum interest charge is $2.00.
THE JANUARY INSTALLMENT OF THE 2020 SEWER ASSESSMENT BILLING IS DUE ON JANUARY 1, 2021.
The JANUARY installment for the Sewer Assessment is due and payable on JANUARY 1, 2021. If payment is not made by FEBRUARY 1, 2021, the installment will become delinquent and subject to interest at the rate of 1-1/2% per month from the installment due date. The minimum interest charge is $5.00.
Failure to receive your tax bills does not exempt you from payment of tax or penalty. Taxes may be paid by mail or online: https://www.trumbull-ct.gov/285/Online-Tax-InquiryPayment-System. The postmark will be used to determine if a payment was made on time. Be sure that your check is made out correctly, or it will be returned.
Payments may also be made at the drop box provided inside Town Hall, Monday through Thursday, 9am to 5pm. These payments should be in a sealed envelope and properly marked with the taxpayer’s name and address. No cash payments are accepted at this time.
For the assessment of October 1, 2019, the Mill Rate is 34.74 for Real Estate, Personal Property and Motor Vehicles.

We do not accept payments over the phone.
Important Notice from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)
If you have received a tax bill from a Town that you did not reside in or garage or vehicle in as of October 1, 2019, contact the Tax Assessor, 203-452-5016, to request a transfer to the correct Town/City or residency as of October 1, 2019.

The Tax Collector’s Office provides billing and collection of real estate, personal property, and motor vehicle taxes. We also bill and collect sewer assessments and sewer usage.
During the months of July and January you may experience lines at Town Hall. You should expect to wait in line if you are coming during this period. Lines are longest at lunchtime and as the last day to pay approaches. When paying in person, please have all your bills with you for faster service.
